Book Fair In Tirunelveli

In June a  Book Fair was held in the V.O.C. Ground at Palayamkottai . This innovation, organised by the Local Authority and Government was designed to encourage students and their families to buy and use books. Many publishers made their books available for people to browse and discounts were available for those who wished to buy. More than 100 books were bought for the School library.

To encourage children to attend this 10 day event competitions were organised for schools from Tirunelveli District. Fifty of our students attended the Fair and, of course, competed with their usual enthusiasm, winning First prize in the Quiz, First and Third in Singing and First in Drawing: a pleasing outcome.

The Fair was a great success and there is now much demand that it should become an annual event.

Kid’s Day Celebration

We welcomed many parents who came to support our ‘Kid’s Day’ celebrations in which all the primary school pupils took part. At 9.30 a.m. Mr. William Winfield declared the Sports Day open and all then enjoyed watching as the children participated with great enthusiasm in exciting events like the Running Race, Frog Race, Musical Chairs, Passing the Ball, Water filling, Bead collecting, Skipping, Balloon Bursting and the like. The winners of each competition were proud to be  photographed on the Winning Stand.

The Chief Guest for the evening function was Mr. Mahendran, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli. Mr.William Winfield also graced the occasion with his presence.

Santhoshi of V Standard gave the welcome address following which there was a musical performance and a graceful dance on the theme of eye donation. The Kindergarten children  performed a skit on ‘Saving the Environment’ which was the cynosure of the day!  Our Principal Mrs. Usha Raman then gave the Annual Report outlining what has been achieved this year.

Of course the highlight of the evening was the Graduation Ceremony for the children who were  finishing their time in the Kindergarten.

Diplomas were presented to the pupils by our Honorable Guests and the Vote of Thanks was delivered by Arshad of III Standard.

We were proud of the children when we saw how they performed: they were living testimony to the well rounded development Sri Jayendra affords its pupils.

Mr. William Winfield Visits Sri Jayendra

We were delighted to welcome Mr. William Winfield who arrived on 24th February for his fourth visit in as many years.

Mr. Winfield was Headmaster of Mill Hill School until his retirement in 2007 and it was he who initiated the partnership between Mill Hill and Sri Jayendra: a partnership which has been of such great value to us.

He was of course given the warmest of welcomes and although he was with us for only one week he again demonstrated his passion for teaching by willingly handling 25 classes at IX and XI Standard.

With his enthusiasm in class and his creative and interactive approach, he totally captured the minds and hearts of the students. They loved his classes: his teaching sessions are something our students look forward to very much.

His visit coincided with the celebration of our Mini Convocation and Sports Day for the Kindergarten and Primary school children. We were very pleased that he agreed to be the Chief Guest of Honour.

Bon Voyage

A team of four staff from our school: Mrs. Padma Ramesh; Mrs. Kalpana Nagarajan; Mr. Selvakumar and Mr. Vanchi Gopalakrishnan are visiting Mill Hill School, London to take part in our Educational Exchange Programme. They arrived in London on 01 March 2013 and will stay for nearly four weeks. This is the fifth group of teachers who have visited Mill Hill.

They left with great excitement and anticipation and we hope this was not dimmed when  they landed in England in temperatures only a degree or two above freezing point. The first two days were spent acclimatising and finding their feet. Bundled up in warm clothes supplied by Mill Hill they have already had a day in London and another visiting St Albans a few miles to the north.

We hope to hear news of their experiences at the school in the near future. We know they will find many things strange but they are assured of a very warm welcome which will make up for the very cold weather.

The Management, Staff and Students wish them to come back with cherishable memories.

An Eye Watering Performance

To celebrate their Silver Jubilee the Aravind Eye hospital in Tirunelveli organized an inter-school competition.  Forty schools entered XI standard candidates into each of four competitions: Oratorical, Science Quiz, Essay Writing and Poster Design. Astonishingly Sri Jayendra came first in two of these and second in the others.

S. Ganeshwar won the Oratorical competition, our team of M. Nowrin Fatima and B. Selva Ganesh came first in the Science Quiz, P. Faseena Beevi was second in Essay writing and G. Abisha Mary came second in Poster Design.  For students from a single school to take so many awards against so much competition is remarkable. Congratulations to all concerned.

V Standard Tour to Thiruparappu Falls and Thotti Paalam

On  2nd February the V standard had an outing to Thiruparappu Falls. Although there was much less water than normal there was sufficient for all the pupils to get suitably soaked and have a very enjoyable time. The children were delighted to find that when they had their picnic lunch by the river a number of elephants were there being bathed by their keepers. A charming sight!

Moving on to Thotti Paalam (Aqueduct) we were disappointed to find there was no water whatsoever flowing through the channel. This made the pupils realise the water situation in Tamil Nadu at the moment is indeed grave. Nevertheless we all enjoyed a walk across the aqueduct with its impressive views.

On the three hour return journey the teachers were of course exhausted but the children had sufficient energy to be very lively indeed for the entire time: the journey was enjoyed by everyone under the age twenty.
