The school was founded in 2009 in memory of Gita Krishnamurthy who had a lifelong interest in bringing education to poor children. Her family are funding both the capital costs and the running costs of the school.
It will develop in the future into a school for around 1,000 children up to X Standard. A three acre site has been acquired near Sri Jayendra and we hope to start moving into the new building during 2013. At the moment the children are being taught in rented accommodation.
It is of inestimable value to these very poor children to get an education in English which is a passport to jobs all over India and indeed the world. It is remarkable how well they pick up the language: they are soon very willing to converse with our foreign visitors and by IV standard can express themselves well and with confidence.
We organise medical checks for the children, give them milk each day and ensure they have brought a decent lunch.
Emanuel School have made the GKV the focus of their partnership with Sri Jayendra. A video of one of the Emanuels teaching English to GKV pupils can be seen below.
