More laurels for Sri Jayendra

The State wide Thanithiran competition is open to all the schools in Tamil Nadu. It is organised by the State Government and Education Department and this year it was held in Tirunelveli.

Eleven competitions were held in each of three age categories in such disciplines as Oratory, Classical Dance, Folk Dance, Quiz and these are conducted first at zonal level, then district level and finally State level.

Eight of our teams came first in the zonal and district competitions so found themselves representing the School in the State level finals which were held in three locations in Tirunelveli on 25th October.

For a single school to have so many teams in the final of such a huge event is remarkable and our pupils deserve much praise and appreciation. They certainly left their mark: we came away with seven prizes which meant Tirunelveli District won the overall championship trophy.

Our successes were:

Senior Instrumental music:     First prize

Senior Folk dance:                  First prize

Senior Quiz:                            First prize

Intermediate Quiz:                  First prize

Intermediate Folk dance:         Second prize

Junior Classical dance:            Second prize

Senior Classical dance:           Third prize

The prize distribution ceremony was organised very grandly on 26th  October in the presence of the honourable State Minister for Education, the Mayor of Tirunelveli, the District collector and the Chief Executive Officer.

The winners of the First prizes in Dance and Music performed again for the pleasure of the dignitaries and then the winners received their trophies with great pride.

Surya: Superstar

We are very proud that our pupil Surya of VIII Standard has been selected to represent Tamil Nadu at Basketball. He will captain the Under 14 team in the 2013-14  National Basketball Tournament at the 59th National School Games organised by the School Games Federation of India.

This will be held in Gotan, Rajasthan in November.

He won his way through a very tough selection procedure which was held at district and zonal levels with his remarkably skillful and effective play: a testament to the dedication he has shown in many hours of practice on the Priory Basketball Court and the excellent coaching he has received from Senthil of our PE Department.

Now, equipped with some warm clothes and shiny new ‘branded’ basketball shoes, he is looking forward to his two and a half day train journey to the frozen North.

We all share his excited anticipation and wish him the very best of luck.

Ignite 13: “Let there be light”

Ignite is a national competition for school pupils up to XII standard. Original technological ideas and innovations are submitted for judgement by a panel of experts. The competition is organised by the National Innovation Foundation of India in partnership with the CBSE and SRISTI  together with a number of State Educational Boards.

For the 2013 competition every state in India and the union territories had pupils who submitted ideas: 20,836 entries in all. From this huge total the panel of experts selected just 38 for awards and one of these was from Jayendra pupil A. Gautham Praveen of XI Standard. He had submitted a design and prototype of a device for removing and replacing light bulbs in difficult to reach sockets.

He will be presented with his award on 19th November  in Ahmedabad where there will be a an exhibition of all the winning projects.

The NIF will patent each idea in the name of the pupil who created it and engage designers and fabricators to develop prototypes.

It gives us great pleasure and satisfaction to know that we have in the School pupils who are creative and innovative thinkers which is something we try to nurture. Well done Gautham!

Akshrabyasam – first steps to school

For the festival of Navarathi which starts on the New Moon (or ‘no moon’ as Indians describe it) people make a ‘kolu’ in their homes: they build a series of steps which are covered in cloth, colourfully decorated and used to display idols and religious items. Some are very impressive and beautifully done. It is great fun to visit each other’s homes to appreciate each kolu and perhaps do some chanting and enjoy a social chat with some seasonal snacks.

Vijaya Dashami (‘victory day’) is the tenth day and marks the end of Navarathi. It is a very auspicious day for starting new projects and traditionally it is used to introduce small children to the world of reading and writing. Akshara Abhiyasam (literally ‘letters practice’) is a ceremony performed at the School on this day for the children who will join the LKG in the next term.

This year the ceremony was on 14 October. Parents and grandparent proudly brought their remarkably small children to take the first steps in their schooling. The children were enrolled in the school and, after the traditional pooja, each went onto the stage in the Priory Conference Centre where the priest guided the child’s had to write their name and  “Om Hari Om” in rice spread on a large brass plate. The School choir rendered bhajans throughout and all adults present found the ceremony delightful even if the children were mystified by it all.
